If A Skatepark can happen here . . .

Northern News Service photo. "Grise Fiord might lie far north of the Arctic Circle and not see the sun for three months a year, but it is now home to Canada's, if not the world's, most northerly skateboard club. " Click the photo to read the whole story.
If a skatepark can happen almost 3000 km north of Edmonton, why can’t it happen where you live?
Most Canadians have never heard of Grise Fiord Nunavut, and that’s not really a surprise because Grise Fiord is a small inuit community of about 150 people about 2800 km north east of Edmonton on the southern tip of Ellesmere Island. This VERY small community that is VERY VERY far north is building a skatepark for the Grise Fiord locs because someone thought it was a good idea and did what it took to make it happen. One Calgary skateboard enthusiast with a vision and the desire to make the vision a reality, lined up the financial support, and now there are skateboarders in a community where temperatures stay below freezing for ten months each year.
This whole project was a real team effort with a well known Calgary businessman and The Source, a Calgary board shop getting things rolling with $500 donations each to buy seven complete skateboards. The Source pitched in to donate some helmets, pads, hoodies, stickers and skate DVDs for the team while the materials to build the obstacles are being provided by the Hamlet of Grise Fiord. (Full story here)
If all this can happen in Grise Fiord, why can’t a new skatepark happen where YOU live? The answer is, and will always be local advocacy by the skate community. Every skatepark is the result of local skaters and their supporters getting organized and working hard to see their dream skatepark a reality. What’s stopping you?
New Indoor Skatepark Opens In Thunder Bay
Partnership Opens Indoor Skatepark
Waay down east in Thunder Bay Ontario, skaters can now skate all year round at the new Sanctuary Indoor Skatepark thanks to a partnership between the Thunder Bay Skateboard Coalition and the Elim Community Christian Centre. While we in the west are too far from Thunder Bay for a road trip to skate Sanctuary, we need indoor skateparks out here too. Skateparktour.ca offers this story hoping to inspire locals wherever they live to find a partnership in their community that would provide more places to skate, especially through the winter months.
